Reasons for Selection

In recognition of an ongoing commitment to the stewardship of the Built Heritage of Muskoka as demonstrated by:

  • Showing sensitivity toward the care of the built environment.
  • Helping to secure a cultural legacy for future generations.
  • Displaying the relationship between built heritage and its environment.
  • Promoting a harmonious blend of the best of the past, present and future recognizing "heritage" as a living tradition.
  • Demonstrating to people of all ages the importance of preserving our built heritage.

Built heritage is an essential part of Muskoka. The continued use, care and preservation of this built heritage is a vital part of the privilege of land ownership in Muskoka.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria and/or characteristics may be considered in determining whether a property is worthy of conservation and/or designation.

  1. A structure being a unique example of specific architectural style or type.
  2. Association of the building or property with a past historical event or community heritage. (i.e. public places or sites)
  3. A building that represents the architectural work of a prominent builder or architect.
  4. A building or structure that is unique in either its method of construction, craftsmanship or use of materials.
  5. A building or property that is associated with a prominent member of the community or groups or historical, commercial or cultural interests within a community.
  6. Where a building is in a distinctive area, it may represent an example of a unique neighbourhood or community character.
  7. Built features may include both planned landscaping and associated site development.(i.e. walks, gates, fences, signage, out buildings etc.)
  8. The overall current condition of a building, and the extent to which it has been changed or modified in the past, to retain architectural or historic integrity - may include both style and use of materials.
  9. The unique placement of a building in the context of the natural environment.
  10. Age, may be considered but not be a barrier to inventory ~ particularly when comparable structures have become rare.
