THE CHURCH OF THE KETTLES, LAKE MUSKOKA

Church of the KettlesC/O D.J. JARRETT

Church of the Kettles is a familiar site to many cottagers. It was built in 1900 on land donated by Rev. C.O.Johnston. Accessible only by water, this summer-only church is located on Lake Muskoka, directly across from Mortimer’s Point. The architecture is quintessentially Muskoka. Made totally from wood, it blends into its setting in a very symbiotic fashion.Legend has it that the rocks nearby were the hiding place for Huron sacramental vessels hidden at the time of the Iriquois invasion.

GLEN ORCHARD GENERAL STORE, GLEN ORCHARD

Glen OrchardLOU & TERRY MYKE

The business began in 1946 when Henry Fudge would come up on weekends with produce from his parents’ Toronto store. He sold the produce from his front porch. When his farm burned in 1955, the community voluntarily built the existing structure. A nephew briefly owned the store, and then it was sold to Dennis Bell in 1972. Whenever you were looking for something and couldn’t find it anywhere else, you could usually find it at Bell’s.

MISS NELLE’S ANTIQUE STORE, BAYSVILLE

Baysville Antique StorDON COREY & MARDI BARKER

Previously known as Langmaid’s Country Store, this is the second oldest building in Baysville. Being lovingly restored by its present owner, Don Corey and his partner Mardi Barker, the pine plank walls of the tearoom have been revealed after several layers of wallboard were stripped away. Clear varathane protects and displays boards as wide as 15 or 20 inches, widths unattainable today. The battens have been replaced bringing the ceiling to its original state. There are many architectural features that make this building unique, especially the balcony and the curved doors that open onto it.

THREE PEAKS COTTAGE, SEVERN RIVER

Three Peaks CottageMRS. BEVERLEY COVINGTON

The original cottage was built around 1930. In 1934, the cottage was moved to its present location on Little Lake on the Severn River.

The arts-and-craft style windows on the main floor and the three pointed windows in the loft give this building its distinctive appearance. The interior features a pine flat-to-the-wall cabinet against stockade cedar logs. The original main room featured cedar pole walls and beams. Additional vintage furniture and stained glass windows further enhance the interior. In renovations to the exterior, the exterior siding is being specially milled to match the original. A very charming heritage building!
