Indicators of Watershed Health (2003)

The first major initiative the Muskoka Watershed Council undertook was to develop a set of indicators of watershed health in order to assess the health of Muskoka's watersheds. It is important to monitor the health of a watershed in order to identify stresses early and develop programs to address any potential issues.

An initial workshop with over 20 expert volunteers was held in November 2002 to begin the process of defining meaningful indicators such as loss of forest cover and amount of shoreline alteration. The Council is currently in the process of assessing what monitoring programs are already in place. The next step will be to identify gaps in information and to try and work with a variety of partners to develop monitoring programs to close these gaps.
